Associate Scientist

Associate Scientist will be responsible for coordination of the development of surface water standards in accordance with the Clean Water Act and Arizona statutes and rules, serving as the lead for proactively developing and updating standards that are scientifically defensible, and responsible for updating and implementing the triennial review of water quality standards and impaired waters identification rule.  Also requires conducting research and/or performing investigation for the purpose of identifying, abating, or eliminating sources of pollutants or hazards that affect either the environment or the health of the population.

Major Responsibilities

  • Review complex or high profile environmental applications, reports and plans

  • Draft and coordinateInvolvement in timely issuance of environmental permits, licenses, approvals or certifications which include site specific requirement and variances for applicable environmental standards to address unique or complex facility conditions[RG1] 

  • Perform basic analysis of environmental data to determine validity, quality, and scientific significance for attainment of standards, trends, equipment performance, pollution source identification, or condition

  • Interpret correlations between data, human activities and environmental effects with minimal review.

  • Lead public events such as permit hearings, training events, and meetings and lead publication of public notices, hearings, and response to comments regarding environmental topics.

  • Develop, prepare and finalize environmental technical reports, plans, policy, standard operating procedures, guidance, and other forms of communication for the public and regulated community.

  • Coordinate environmental monitoring activities with outside groups to meet agency objectives

  • Communicate extensive scientific or technical information, guidance, support, coordination or oversight of environmental

IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS

·         Bachelor’s degree in Law, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Hydrology, or Chemical Engineering

·         8 years of experience

·         Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for two years of experience

·         Doctorate in a related field may substitute for four years of experience
