Job Description

Maricopa County Correctional Health Services provides evidence-based, medically necessary medical treatment to patients in the Maricopa County Jails so that they can proceed through the judicial system.

Correctional Nursing is hands-on, patient focused nursing that challenges your knowledge, critical thinking and assessment skills to the fullest. The major emphasis of nursing in a correctional setting is the provision of primary care requiring the skills and characteristics of community health, occupational health, ambulatory care, emergency care and school nursing blended in a single role. Registered nurses working in a corrections setting must demonstrate the essence of nursing in a practice setting and work environment that does not have health care as its primary mission. Providing health education is part of every patient encounter. 

Health clinics are located inside the 6 Maricopa County jails in a safe and secure working environment provided by the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office.

Valid unrestricted license as a Licensed Practical Nurse legally able to practice in the state of Arizona. Prefer two years of experience as a LPN. Prefer experience in medical setting requiring large medication passes in Med/Surge, ER or Urgent care and in a Psychiatric setting. 

Background Check completion is required. Must be able to work inside a jail. Must be able to respond to a man down (emergency situation). Must be able to get on floor to perform CPR chest compressions. Must be able to walk up to 4 miles in a 12 hours shift.  Must be able to complete large medication administration passes to hundreds of patients. Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with proper use of medical/clinic equipment.  Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with medication administration, applicable nursing and health care standards, regulations, statutes and departmental policies and procedures. In addition to medication administration, the LPN works closely with the medical staff and RNs to provide care for patients requiring data collection and observation, critical thinking, prioritizing and organizing tasks, reporting findings and initiating clinical interventions as appropriate while maintaining a safe and secure environment following all CHS/MCSO security/safety regulations.
