Police Communications Operators answer calls from the public and communicate via radio with police officers regarding all types of emergencies and non-emergencies. The City of Phoenix is seeking individuals who demonstrate the ability to calmly work with the citizens of Phoenix and police officers while using a multi-line telephone system, radio network panel, and Computer Aided Dispatch system to receive, prioritize, and process calls for police services.

The City is currently using NTN exclusively to receive applications and conduct candidate testing.  Do not use the "Apply Now" links on this posting.  You will not be able to submit an application on the City of Phoenix Careers site until you have successfully passed the test. 

The following is a summary of how the NTN process works:

Testing method

National Testing Network (NTN) uses a computerized simulation of 911 call taking and radio dispatch on an individual work station with head phones.

Test site

I-10 and University Dr (4840 S 33rd St, Phoenix, AZ 85040).

Testing frequency

There are no application due dates, you can apply at any time.  Multiple testing options are available per week, including Saturdays; candidate may pick date/time most convenient to them. 

Test results

Candidates and hiring managers have access to results upon completion of the computerized test.

Passing Scores

The minimum passing score for each section is as follows:

Video Test (Call Taker) 63

Dispatch Test 62

Notes Test  63

Required Combined Passing Score  64

Portability of results

Candidates are able to apply to any agency in the NTN network, including several agencies in the Phoenix metro area.  Scores are kept in the system for one year.

Cost

$41 payable by credit card; additional fees apply when sharing results with other agencies. There is a needs based Hardship Waiver available for applicants that cannot afford the fee.  The waiver form is available on the NTN website.

Interview and selection process

Candidates who pass the NTN test will be placed on the Eligibility List and may be emailed or called to come into the Police Department for additional in-house computerized testing and interviews with hiring managers. Candidates who are successful in this phase will be provided a background packet to complete.
