Central air conditioning, commonly referred to as central air (U.S.) or air-con (UK), is an air conditioning system which uses ducts to distribute cooled and/or dehumidified air to more than one room, or uses pipes to distribute chilled water to heat exchangers in more than one room, and which is not plugged into a standard electrical outlet.
With a typical split system, the condenser and compressor are located in an outdoor unit; the evaporator is mounted in the air handler unit. With a package system, all components are located in a single outdoor unit that may be located on the ground or roof.
Air conditioners come in many different ways. You need to decide what your budget is before jumping into the air conditioning shopping world. For those of you looking for Cheap Air Conditioners, you will want to look at window units. Others of you looking to spend your money on something that will last longer, look more at the Air Con units that are more of a central air unit.
This is a diagram to help you understand how your central air unit will work.
1) Be sure to clean your air filter. This is one of the most commonly overlooked routine home maintenance tasks but can save you big bucks and give you cleaner air for you and your family to breathe. A good air filter can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowe's.
2) Adjust your thermostat. Change the fan setting on your thermostat from "AUTO" to "FAN ON". This won't prevent your A/C unit from turning on but will keep air circulating in your home which will make your home feel cooler without running the condenser on your unit as often which save you money.
3) Wash your outside condenser coil. If your condenser coil is dirty then your A/C unit will run hot which will cause it to run inefficient.
4) Shut your vents. Some rooms of your home will naturally stay cooler. Identify those rooms and shut the vents located in those rooms. This will cause the cool air from your unit to be focused into the naturally warmer rooms in your home.
5) Don't turn your A/C unit off. When you leave the home, don't turn your unit to the "OFF" position but simply set the thermostat a few degrees warmer. In the long run it is cheaper to have your unit consistantly cooling rather then having your unit off then having it try to cool a very hot room.
