Benefits of Attending a Job Fair

As you are eager to get back to work, you are going to crawl every job board (hopefully using LocalWork.com 🙂 and submit your resume to as many great companies as possible.  Finding a job is a full-time job.  We recommend making sure you utilize all tools available when looking for local jobs.  Job fairs can be a great tool to utilize as you are looking for new employment opportunities.  Here are a few of the top reasons to attend job fairs.

1- Practice: If you haven’t been in the workforce for awhile, it can be a hard adjustment talking about yourself.  Most people don’t like to brag about accomplishments or sounds narcissistic.  It can be challenging to talk about yourself in a professional manner that highlights your top qualities.  Job fairs are a great place to get you in-front of actual HR professionals and start talking.  The practice you get here, might be the confidence booster you need when walking into an interview.

2-Decision Makers: When submitting your resume online, you don’t get real-time verbal response on if you have the right education or experience they are looking for.  It is a great way to get a point of contact inside a company who knows exactly what they are looking for.  In addition to the instant feedback, there is a lot of value on knowing who you should follow-up with.  Most business is done with who you know, like, and trust.  Make that good impression with the decision maker.  They will remember you when you call them with the follow-up.

3-Resume Feedback: Can you imagine submitting your resume to dozens and dozens of employers and never hearing back from them? Might be your under qualified, but it could also be something as simple as a resume adjustment.  At the job fairs, you should be bold enough and vulnerable enough to ask for resume feedback.  This can be a big help to allow you to hear directly from hiring managers what they look for on the resumes.  If you’re missing the necessary elements employers are looking for, you are able to catch it early on and adjust.

At the job fair, you can never under estimate the power of positive enthusiasm.  Keep that smile and happiness with each employer and you are bound to make a great first impression.
